# Text to ASCII art generator

Type a word, pick one of 14 FIGlet fonts and get a big banner made of ordinary characters for your README, terminal, code comment or group chat.

## How to make ASCII art from text

Type your text and choose a font; the banner redraws as you go. The width limit wraps long phrases onto new rows between words: 80 columns suits a terminal or README, 40 a narrow chat window. Alignment then lines the rows up left, centred or right within that width.

**Letter spacing** sets how close the letters sit. Font default is what the font's designer chose. Squeezed lets neighbouring letters share their edges, Touching sets them side by side without overlapping, and Roomy gives every letter its full width.

Copy puts the art on your clipboard and Download saves it as a plain .txt file. To make sure it keeps its shape after pasting:

- In a README or Markdown file, put it inside a code block (a line of three backticks above and below).
- In Slack, Discord or Teams, send it as a code block too; normal messages use a proportional font that bends the letters.
- The Unicode fonts (Future, Pagga, ANSI Compact and Classy) are drawn with box and block characters, which code editors and terminals show well but some older tools do not.

## Questions about ASCII text art

**What is FIGlet?**

FIGlet is a program from 1991 by Glenn Chappell and Ian Chai that prints large letters made of ordinary characters. Its font files describe how to draw each letter; this page uses the figlet.js library to read those fonts right in your browser.

**Why did some of my characters disappear?**

Each font only has the characters its designer drew: usually English letters, digits and punctuation, often with accented Latin letters. Emoji and most other scripts are left out, and the page lists which ones it skipped.

**Can I use the art anywhere?**

Yes, the text you make is yours to use. The fonts come from the FIGlet and TOIlet projects or were released under the MIT licence; the about page credits every font's author.

**Why does my art look crooked after pasting?**

The place you pasted into shows text in a proportional font, where an i is narrower than a W. Paste it into a code block, or switch to a monospace font such as Menlo, Consolas or Courier.
