# Kaomoji picker

255 kaomoji, the upright Japanese-style emoticons, sorted by mood and by animal. Click any face to copy it, then paste it wherever you like.

## What kaomoji are

Kaomoji (顔文字, "face characters") grew out of Japanese online chat in the 1980s. Unlike sideways smileys such as :-) you read them upright, and the eyes carry most of the feeling: ^^ for joy, T_T for tears, ಠ_ಠ for a hard stare. They borrow letters from Japanese, Greek, Cyrillic, Kannada and Thai, so they work anywhere text does, with no images.

Search by mood (happy, angry, sleepy) or animal (cat, bear, bunny), or tap a category. The last 16 faces you copy stay under Recently copied, saved in this browser only.

### Getting them to look right

- Every font draws them a little differently, so a face can look wider or narrower in another app.
- Markdown and Discord treat backslashes, underscores and asterisks as formatting: the shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ can lose an arm. Put it in a code span (backticks) or type an extra backslash.
- Many sites only allow letters and digits in usernames but accept kaomoji in display names and bios.

## Questions about kaomoji

**Why does a kaomoji show boxes or question marks?**

The app or device has no font with one of its characters. Most phones and computers have them all; trying another app or updating the system usually fixes it.

**Is it fine to use kaomoji anywhere?**

They are ordinary text characters, so they work in chats, posts, bios, emails and even code comments, wherever plain text goes.

**Where is my recent list kept?**

In your browser's local storage on this device only. Nothing is sent anywhere, and clearing this site's data empties the list.
