Text box & border generator
Put a neat frame around any text, drawn with line characters or plain ASCII, ready to paste into code comments, READMEs, terminal output and plain-text emails.
Boxes that stay lined up
Widths are counted in monospace columns, so emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters, which take two columns each, still meet the right-hand border in a code editor or terminal.
- Style: Single, Rounded, Double, Bold and Dashed use Unicode box-drawing characters (┌─┐). ASCII, Stars and Hash use only plain keyboard characters, so they work in any font and any old tool.
- Padding adds spaces at the sides and empty lines above and below the text.
- Wrap lines breaks long lines at spaces to keep the box narrow; 72 columns is a common limit for commit messages and plain-text email.
- Title sits in the top border, and with dividers each blank line becomes a line across the box, handy for menus and headed notes.
- Comment markers put //, #, -- or ; in front of every line, or wrap the whole box in /* */ or <!-- -->, so you can paste it straight into source code.
Questions about text boxes
Why is the right-hand border crooked after pasting?
The place you pasted into is not using a monospace font, or its font draws emoji at a different width. Paste into a code block, or take the emoji out.
Which style is the safest?
ASCII (+-+) works everywhere, including old terminals, config files and tools that only accept plain ASCII.
Can I put ASCII art inside a box?
Yes. Make a banner with the text to ASCII tool, paste it here, leave wrapping off and set the padding to taste.
